Outdoor Activities in Bedford County

Bedford County offers scenic wilderness trails and lakes, with 8 state parks within driving distance of the inn. Relax and take a covered bridge driving tour or enjoy the fall foliage.  Here are some interesting places to visit while staying at the Golden Eagle Inn.

Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike Tunnel

Last open to traffic in 1968, this 13 miles of abandoned superhighway is an eerie hiking or biking trail. This is a desolate trail located in Bedford and Fulton counties. Each of the two tunnels are each about a mile long and dark. Helmets and lights are needed to bike/walk through the tunnels. This trail is not maintained and you do so at your own risk. Main access point is near Breezewood and parking is available along Tannery Road off of Route 30 (Lincoln Highway). Visit the website for more information.

Blue Knob State Park

6,128 acre park offering year-round outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, skiing, and cross-country skiing. Great place to do wildlife watching, fishing, or hunting. Pool and picnic areas available.

Covered Bridges of Bedford County

Bedford County has 14 covered bridges built by craftsman over a 100 years ago. Visit the website for more information about each bridge and their locations. You can see many of them by biking the Covered Bridge Loop or following the Covered Bridge Driving Tour.

Jacks Mountain "Thousand Steps" Heritage Trail

Jacks Mountain is a part of PA's central mountain region known as the Appalachians and is located between Lewistown and Huntingdon. From its slopes you have magnificent views in all directions. The Juniata River cuts through this mountain known as Jacks Narrows. The Thousand Steps Trail goes halfway up the mountain. Created in 1936, there are 1,043 steps. Near the town of Mill Creek, there is a pull-off on the left side with a Heritage Route sign. To get to the trailhead, walk towards the south end of the lot towards Mt. Union. 

Kooser State Park

This 250 acre park offers a trout stream that goes the full length of the park. Located in the Laurel Highlands it has an altitude of 2,600 feet. Outdoor activities include hiking, picnicking, cross-country skiing, and fishing. Open year round sunrise to sunset.

Located in Somerset County, the park consists of 4,062 acres of mountainous terrain offering a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, fishing, and wildlife watching. Park is open year round from sunrise to sunset.

This 612-acre park is a mix of hardwood and evergreen forest that offers a scenic place for hiking and picnicking. Park is open year round sunrise to sunset.

The park is 20,500 acres offering a multitude of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, biking, and wildlife watching. It is known for its whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River. Park is open sunrise to sundown year round.

Trough Creek State Park

The park is a 541-acre scenic gorge with rugged hiking trails that lead to Balanced Rock and Rainbow Falls. Other activities include fishing, biking, and snowmobiling. Open year round sunrise to sunset.
